Disable Binder redirection policy

I take a big Hospital organization with 1000 plus end users that is going to migrate to OneDrive. Currently they are using folder redirection. After the migration they desire to disable this. Goal is to leave the files in the destination folder from the redirection and prevent the files from being downloaded back to the customer machines. They are running into the following problems per testing.

"When we tested the removal of this policy, the files from the '%USERNAME%\Desktop' were copied locally to C:\%USERNAME%\Desktop on next login. If we alter the lesser setting to "Leave the folder in the new location when policy is removed", the file redirection (Windows Explorer link) remains active."

Based on this documentation, this is expected. All-time Practices for Binder Redirection in User Information and Settings Management | Microsoft Docs

"The problem with enabling "Leave the folder in the new location when policy is removed" is that the redirected folders remain redirected (e.g. Desktop is withal redirected to our server share Users\%USERNAME%\Desktop), when we would like to break/remove that redirection in one case nosotros switch to OneDrive. The registry entry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Beat Folders) remains redirected every bit well, from what I remember."

Anyone run into this before? How tin you disable the redirection, prevent the files copying locally, and have the folders and files no longer redirected?

Hello bearding user,

Cheers for posting here.

As I sympathize, we should disable /remove the folder redirection policy first, that is we should redirect back our redirected binder to the local userprofile location when the policy is removed.

Then migrate /redirect/ motility Windows known folders to OneDrive.

For more data we tin refer to link below.
Redirect and move Windows known folders to OneDrive
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/redirect-known-folders

Tip: The sequence of operations is not to drift to Onedrive get-go, and then disable the folder redirection policy.

Hope the inofrmation above is helpful.

Should you have any question or concern, please feel free to let united states know.

So the customer doesn't want the data copied back locally. They experience this will drag their network down considering of the volume of files that would be copied back locally. They desire to avert this impact to the network.

Tin can the customer not just migrate to OneDrive from the server location. Once that is completed, disable the redirect in a way that the files don't go back to the local computer while at the same fourth dimension permanently removing the redirect then that it no longer volition exist in place afterwards.

Thanks

Know folder types for ODB are the My Documents, Pictures and Desktop folders. They have zilch to do with the folder redirection I"m talking about.

I just desire to know if I have a binder on my computer that is redirected to a server share, how practise I disable that redirection (that was deployed via GPO) without it copying the files back to the local drive AND delete the redirection from existence. Disabling the policy leaves the redirection in place. I don't desire that.

The trouble is the folder remains redirected. The customer does not want that. If you recall about information technology, what the client is asking for hither is to become back in fourth dimension every bit if the GPO never existed. The files remain on the server and the folder was back to its original state of non being redirected. Is that possible?

For the 2 settings you have in that screen shot they both cause 2 dissimilar bug.
1) Leave the folder in the new location when policy is removed - > Binder remains redirected. Nosotros don't want this. Yes, we want to proceed files on the server merely we also want to remove whatever being of this binder redirect on the customer machines and the folders affected by the policy.
2) Redirect the folder dorsum -> This causes the copying of files back to clients, thus network problem. Nosotros don't want this.

Original Postal service:
"The trouble with enabling "Go out the binder in the new location when policy is removed" is that the redirected folders remain redirected (east.thousand. Desktop is still redirected to our server share Users\%USERNAME%\Desktop), when we would like to break/remove that redirection once nosotros switch to OneDrive. The registry entry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders) remains redirected too, from what I retrieve."

JJonStudsrud-0829 Where yous able to observe a solution to this issue?
I'k working on a file migration with the aforementioned scenario as yours.
thank you

Hi @JonStudsrud-0829

I am attempting to do something similar simply my method is to change the redirection policy in stages as the users are migrated.

Firstly, set the Redirection policy removal behaviour to 'Get out the folder in the new location when policy is removed', if not already prepare and allow this to replicate.

Remove this GPO from the user via security filtering on the OU or move to a make clean OU. gpupdate /force / user log out and back in

Create a new GPO to set the same folder redirections just this time gear up the target to 'Redirect to the local userprofile location' and take off 'Move the contents of [folder name] to the new location - these settings should make information technology behave as though it had never been redirected and non copy the files over.

Utilise this new GPO to the User - gpupdate /forcefulness / log out and dorsum in

Hopefully the user at present has an empty set of folders in their local user profile.

And then use OneDrive KFM to point the folders to OneDrive if required

This is what I'thou currently setting up a exam lab for, if anyone else has success before I do please share!
